A Brief History...

I am writing this blog in an effort to let everyone know about the great work my lacrosse team did at Crespi Carmelite High School last season. When asked by the school to take on a community service project I thought long and hard about what to do. Clean the beach? No! Feed the homeless? Perhaps. Teach inner city kids how to play lacrosse and get them involved? good Idea... But I had something more grand in mind... After all....go big or go home, right?

So, after learning that my ex-spouse was again diagnosed with breast cancer and would have to undergo for a second time, months of chemotherapy and a double mastectomy...It hit hit me.

My ex-spouse is a carrier of the BRCA1 gene and I have 3 daughters. I realized that as a coach at an all boy's Catholic school being asked to do a community service project I have a small army at my disposal. Game On!

What we decided to do was have a walk-a-thon benefitting hereditary breast cancer. What happened after we made the decision was nothing short of a life changing experience. Not only for me, but the young men I work with everyday on the lacrosse team. The wheels were turning...how could we pull this off? Who would help us? How much could we raise? What would we do with the money we raised? Would people donate in this economy? How would we reach out to people and spread the word?

So....after putting together a small business plan and pitching the idea to my team mom's....people wanted to help. Remember the movie with Kevin Costner, Field of Dreams??
Build it and they will come! But I had some big obstacles in my way. The school thought it would detract from other fundraising projects....I guaranteed them I would not solicit one single family from the school for a donation. I was told it would be impossible to do with out school families donating to the cause. Fortunately, and I say this for the sake of the project, I am one stubborn guy. I am competitive, and if you tell me it cant be done I will find a way to do it.

So stick with me and in the next few days I will tell you precisely how WE made this happen and what it has turned into.
